The first Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital international uniportal VATS training program was launched in 2014. Since then, the periodic program has enrolled trainees of nearly 800, from 85 different countries, including 31 long-time attendees who received training for more than 6 months. Led by the world-renowned pioneering uniportal VATS surgeon Dr. Diego Gonzalez-Rivas, the program has by now become the largest among its counterparts around the world, and the only one in China. Through years of development, the program now features live surgery demonstra- tion, case discussion, themed lectures and off-campus activities. On the program, the attendees will not only be able to observe almost all types of minimally invasive thoracic surgery, but will also get the opportunity to peek at the “magical city” Shanghai, a Chinese gateway to the world with a peculiar blending of both Eastern and Western aesthetics. Now that the standard fortnight training program has proven successful in introducing uniportal VATS and has been recommended by various international academ- ic groups such as EACTS, ESTS and JACS, it’s our consideration to extend the program with a more profound long-term version that will benefit the trainees with hands-on practice and immersive training.
