From 1989 to 1990, as a senior visiting scholar, he was sent to the BARNES Hospital of the University of Washington University of Medicine in the United States to focus on studying the clinical and experimental research of lung transplantation, under the guidance of international lung transplant pioneer Professor J.D.Cooper.
Professor Ding Jia'an has been practicing medicine for over 60 years and has extensive knowledge in the fields of benign and malignant diseases such as the lungs, trachea, mediastinum, and esophagus. At the same time, he is adept at conducting experimental research in combination with difficulties in clinical work, achieving fruitful results in projects such as "polypropylene hollow fiber oxygenation research", "NiTi memory alloy stent treatment for severe tracheal stenosis", " Pulmonary resection and lung volume reduction surgery treated for lung cancer combined with severe lung emphsema", "NSCLC biological characteristics, postoperative drug sensitivity testing and molecular pathology research", "surgical treatment of difficult tracheal carina diseases", etc, Has won the second prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award three times, the third prize twice, the second prize of Shanghai Clinical Medical Achievement Award once, the second prize of China Medical Science and Technology Progress Award once, and the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Award once.
In terms of scientific management, found the "Training Plan for Thoracic Surgeons" and "Assessment Regulations for Medical, Teaching, and Research of Thoracic Surgeons", resulting in many talents in the thoracic surgery team and strong momentum for the development of the discipline. He also established an annual National General Thoracic Surgery New Progress Learning Class, which has been ongoing for 26 sessions, with rich and comprehensive content.
Published over 217 papers and served as the chief editor and coeditor of 6 monographs. He has won the title of exemplary individual of the National and Shanghai Health System and the nomination award of Shanghai Top Ten Doctors for many times. In 2013, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for Lung Cancer Research by the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, and in 2015, he was awarded the Outstanding Contribution Award in Thoracic Surgery by the Chinese Medical Association. In 2017, he was awarded the "Outstanding Contribution Award of China Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery" by the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association.
